It sounds like something out of science fiction, but Forbes.com has reported that a company would like to use smart meters as part a giant super computer.
The plan would take advantage of the fact that smart meters (at least those that Hive Computing is considering using) apparently have computing power similar to a cell phone and the capacity to send data wirelessly.
As smart meters usually transmit intermittently (and each pulse of microwave radiation can be quite brief) some bright spark had the idea that the spare computing capacity and data transmission time could be put to use as part of a distributed super computer.
The only problem is, of course, that smart meters are installed in people’s homes and businesses and using smart meters as part of a super computer in this way would of course expose people to more potentially carcinogenic microwave radiation.
