NBCnews.com has reported that a “smart meter” can function as an in-home spy system. In an article titled “Smart meters can be used to spy on private homes” the reporter described how researchers discovered that a German “smart meter” company (Discovergy) transmitted unencrypted data over an insecure link.
The researchers were able to intercept this data, which provided sufficient information to be able to track what was going on in a household in terms of what appliance was in use at what time. The data was so detailed that they could even determine what TV programme people were watching.
What’s more as NBCnews.com reports: “Flaws in Discovergy’s Web interface also enabled the researchers to send back rigged meter readings to the company, and to tap into the company’s servers and obtain a complete record of all the information collected by a home’s smart meter.”
The researchers presented their findings at a”Smart Hacking for Privacy” conference and their presentation may be viewed at this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYe4SwQn2GE&feature=youtu.be

NB: For people who are interested in privacy issues as they relate to “smart meters”, this website provides further information from a New Zealand perspective: http://smartmeterpowerstruggle.wordpress.com/
Please note that if you are concerned about privacy, it is a good idea to check the terms and conditions of your electricity provider. The data gathered by “smart meters” provides another potential income stream for electricity companies if it is sold to third parties. In NZ, at least two electricity companies (Genesis and its subsidiary EnergyOnline) have the following statements in their terms and conditions:
“You agree that we own all meter reading information….You consent to us…disclosing meter reading information in respect of you and your premises to third parties.” [emphasis in the original]
https://www.genesisenergy.co.nz/terms-and-conditions
http://www.energyonline.co.nz/terms
Please note that both Genesis and EnergyOnline state that their terms and conditions may be modified in writing, so if you are a customer of one of these companies and are otherwise happy with their service, you may wish to contact the company and re-negotiate the terms and conditions so that they protect your privacy. (If you do this, and would like to share the result please email through this link https://stopsmartmeters.org.nz/contact-us/.)
(Please note that other NZ companies may have similar provisions in their terms and conditions. I have not had time to check all companies’ terms and conditions. If you check your company’s terms and conditions and find that there are similar clauses, please email through the Contact form at this link https://stopsmartmeters.org.nz/contact-us/so the information can be shared on www.stopsmartmeters.org.nz.)

According to the article:
“PowerNet will begin its installation of smart meters within the next couple of months, after the announcement of a $24.5 million investment.”
The roll out is planned to occur over a three year period. To their credit, while PowerNet chief executive Jason Franklin said that while he expected “education” about “smart meters” would cause people to welcome them, “Ultimately, if someone doesn’t want a smart meter we won’t impose one on them.”

Hi,
This is a note to let you know that recently I re-contacted Genesis Energy concerning the removal of this smart meter from my property. My initial contact, with Genesis Energy when these were first installed on the coast was to be to be told “no Smart Meter no electricity”!
However this time they were very helpful and within a week a contractor arrived and removed the modem at no extra charge. I will forward for your information their letter to me.
Sincerely,
[Name supplied]
Site editor’s comment: This contributor was a sent an email by Genesis which stated that when the modem was removed, the meter would no longer transmit data via the Vodafone network and meter readers would need to call at the home to get manual meter readings. The email also stated that the company could not guarantee the meter reading would remain a “non-chargeable” service in future due to the fact that many of the company’s customers will have “advanced” meters.

An article on the website of Stop Smart Meters UK reports that a patent for a device to reduce exposure the the pulsed microwave radiation (such as is produced by Wi-Fi routers) states that this type of radiation is “genotoxic” i.e. it causes damage to DNA.
You can read the full story at this link:
http://stopsmartmeters.org.uk/major-phone-firm-patent-admits-non-thermal-exposures-to-wireless-radiation-is-genotoxic-causes-clear-damage-to-hereditary-material/
Editor’s comment: Like mobile phones,”smart meters” are also a source of microwave radiation. (How much radiation exposure is caused by a “smart meter” varies in relation to the make and model of the meter and the location of the meter in/on a home or building, among other factors.)

Site editor’s note: Counties Power is currently installing “smart meters” in the area in which it maintains electricity lines (Franklin and Papkura areas.) These meters are in a mesh network. For further details see this link: https://stopsmartmeters.org.nz/government-and-electricity-industry-positions/counties-power-smart-meter-rollout-now-in-progress/
Below you can read a letter from a retired nurse who asserted her right to say no to a “smart meter” because of the potential effects on her health and privacy.
Counties Power responded to the letter below by informing the nurse in writing that a “smart meter” will not be installed; a great result, so the letter below could be used as a template for other people who do not want a “smart meter”.
(For more information on how to prevent a “smart meter” installation please see this link: https://stopsmartmeters.org.nz/how-to-avoid-getting-a-smart-meter/ )
Please note that even if you have a written agreement with your electricity company (or lines company) not to install a “smart meter” it is prudent to put a lock and sign on your meter box in case of communication glitches mean that your name is not removed from the installation list.
NOTICE OF NO CONSENT TO TRESPASS
This is a legal notice.
Be advised, you and all other parties are hereby denied consent for installation and use of any and all “Smart Meters”, “Smart Boxes”, “Advanced Meters” or any other surveillance and activity monitoring device, or devices, at the above property.
These devices can impinge on my privacy, due to it having the capability of being a surveillance system, can impinge on my health due to the possible carcinogen as acknowledged by the WHO, specifically radiofrequency electromagnetic fields, emitted by your wireless ‘Smart Meter’. The ‘Smart Meter’ also emits biologically destructive “pulsed” and “dirty electricity” radiation in one’s home, and that is UNLAWFUL because your power company has no easement (rightful access) to do that!! A ‘Smart Meter’ also has potential to interfere with my freedom, which is inherent – not the benefit of citizenship, nor conferred/granted me by government or any other agency. The potential for ‘Smart Meters’ to misuse my personal data is unethical. With a ‘Smart Meter’ installed, my freedom to do what I want, when I want, in my own home can be potentially curtailed and monitored by Counties Power computers.
Unethical too is the absence of any notification by Counties Power that having a ‘Smart Meter’ installed at people’s homes is optional. Analogue meters are a proven and perfectly reliable and safe technology having been in use since 1872.
Installation and use of any surveillance and activity monitoring device that sends and receives communications technology is hereby refused and prohibited. Informed consent is legally required for installation of any surveillance device and any device that will collect and transmit private and personal data to undisclosed and unauthorized parties for undisclosed and unauthorized purposes. Authorization for sharing of personal and private information may only be given by the originator and subject of that information. That authorization is hereby denied and refused with regard to the above property and all its occupants.
This property is owned under ‘a grant in fee simple title’ and trespass applies for entry without invitation or the express written permission from the property owners.
All contact with the property owners must be in writing.
Yours faithfully,
